I Cannot Be Beautiful without Lip Gloss!

So there I was getting ready to walk out the door on my way to work at 6:40 am. Ella was already up, dressed, and hair in a headband (her preferred hair accessory at the moment). We were having a great morning so far. No Grumpy Gus in sight. I said "Goodbye, I love you!" with purse and keys in hand when she asks for lip gloss.

At this point let me back up a little. Ella had a dance recital two weeks ago in which she was allowed to wear mascara, blush, and lip gloss. She thought she looked so beautiful and really she was. She loved everything about makeup. Then last week we both had strep and put makeup on Saturday to feel better. Ella became obsessed with lip gloss and wanted it all day long.

Fast forward to yesterday morning in which I am staring at my daughter my mind already on school when she asks for more lip gloss. I tell her "no, not this morning" and turn to open the door. Ella suddenly sobs with real tears in her eyes... "but I can't be beautiful without lip gloss!"

I stop and tell her that she is beautiful no matter what she looks like. She is still sobbing with tears rolling down her face. "No I am not. Not without lip gloss." At this point I am wondering how in the world I have such a girlie girl who loves pink, dresses, and makeup. All things I could very easily live without. I bend down, give her a hug and kiss, tell her to go wake up her dad, then walk out the door without giving her lip gloss. I think I won the battle, but am still fighting the war.

So yes, Virgina, you can be beautiful without lip gloss!
